What is it?

UPW is Tony Robbins’ flagship event spanning across 4 days. I attended it live in Singapore in 2018 without knowing much about him. The week prior the event, I watched a Tony Robbins documentary on Netflix portraying his seminar. I saw people crying, shouting. It looked kinda voodoo to me, I’m not gonna lie. I was thinking to myself: “Why would anyone cry just by listening to Tony Robbins speak on stage?”.

But I knew Tony was arguably the best in the world at what he did (whatever that motivational speaking thing is I thought) so I wanted to check him out and experience it myself. And EXPERIENCE it I did. It’s really hard to describe the content and the feeling you get at a Tony Robbins event.

It’s very “American”. Expect lots of NLP, High Fives, hugs, loud energetic music, aerobic/dancing moves. Tony is a master at capturing and driving attention using his NLP techniques. You don’t feel bored listening to him speak for 4 days as your mind is constantly engaged.

This post is not meant to make a summary of the content, I’m sure it can be found online in other blogs. But rather, I wanted to share my takeaways from it.

Tony talked about the 6 core human needs that drive every decision you make. Why do people do what they do? Everyone has at least 2 primary human needs (Certainty, Uncertainty/variety, Significance, Connection/Love, Growth, Contribution). When people have 3 core human needs, you create addiction.

What does it mean and how to use this? Well, whenever you communicate with someone and want to drive a certain action or behaviour, it could be selling a product or service, better understand your spouse or partner, you need to understand what the core 2 human needs of the other person are first. Then you can adapt your communication style and messaging accordingly.

Another big one for me was the realisation of personal beliefs, personal limitations (“I can’t do this because…[fill-in-the-blank]”). Tony teaches that 80% of success in life is Psychology and 20% is mechanics. He goes through multiple exercises to train your mindset and your body to switch into Peak State as opposed to Suffering state. And it can be done in a heartbeat with practice.

All in all, I think Tony Robbins is the kind of guys that you either love or hate. But most people who have experienced one of his talks or events are magnetically absorbed by his charisma and contagious energy that makes you think: “What if I lived my life with the same energy and intensity everyday? What would it change to my life? What could I achieve in business, in relationships, in my marriage, spiritually and all areas of life?”

For those who are curious about this, I encourage you to give it a shot without any expectations and go with an open mind, play the game full out. Worst case scenario, nothing changes and you would have had some kind of entertainment from it, best case scenario, it could change your life for the better.

I attended UPW live in a physical event in Singapore pre-COVID. At the time of this writing, UPW has gone virtual which I believe is a good cost effective alternative while the live events are back if you want to dip your toe in the Tony Robbins universe.
